For a long time, I didn’t really think much about what I was wearing for training. Just standard rashguards from the usual brands—tight synthetic stuff, mostly polyester. That’s what everyone wears in BJJ, so I never questioned it.

But over time I started running into a problem I couldn’t really ignore anymore. My skin didn’t react well to it. I was getting a lot of irritation, constant friction, and at some point even abscesses in areas where the fabric was rubbing during training.
At first I tried to explain it away. Training too much, hygiene, bad timing—anything but the gear itself. But it kept happening.

Eventually I started paying attention to the materials I was wearing, and that’s when I changed things up. I moved away from synthetic fabrics and started using more natural materials like bamboo and cotton.

That’s basically how I ended up with Daruma.

Their bamboo rashguards just work better for me. They feel softer on the skin, breathe a bit better, and don’t have that plasticky feeling I always had with standard rashguards.

Same story with the hemp gi. It feels durable and solid for training, but at the same time more natural to wear. Hemp also has some antibacterial properties, which in practice just means it stays fresher over time compared to what I was used to.

After switching, I didn’t really think much about it anymore. My training just felt a bit more comfortable, and I wasn’t dealing with the same constant skin issues in the background.
Over time, that was enough for me to just stick with it without overthinking it.
